Hi there! Welcome to Rooted Essence, a health and wellness blog dedicated to simplifying your hectic, active lifestyle!  I’m Chelsey – the girl behind the scenes!

I started Rooted Essence in 2016 because I was looking for a way to share my passions with the world!  It started out as a blog about herbs and natural remedies, and has transitioned into a fitness blog meant to promote a healthy, balanced lifestyle through wholesome foods, healthy habits, and an engaged and active lifestyle!  Our bodies are our temples, and what we put in them and how we treat them every day has a huge impact on the quality of life we live.


My overall objective with Rooted Essence is to provide you with simple recipes, convenient workouts, and natural living tips that will allow you to maintain your hectic, active lifestyle without missing a beat!


About me


I currently reside in the northwoods of Wisconsin in a bustling little city known as Rhinelander.  I work as a Natural Resource Biologist full-time, which is AWESOME because I get to work outdoors and live my passion of protecting the environment.

In my free time, you can often find me trekking around in the woods.  I’ve always been a restless child, and activity is my life!  My true passion is endurance sports – I’m talking marathons and ultra marathons. I LIVE for that runner’s high you get when it’s just you and the road for hours. You know, those long, sweaty runs that leave you wondering WTH you are doing with your life.  There’s something magical about those long hours of solitude that really help you find yourself!

Although endurance sports are my calling, I also enjoy fun fitness classes and exercising with my close group of friends.  I’m always up for trying new things, and I have a secret love for kickboxing even though I’ve never actually tried it yet! My fiancé and I love exploring new hiking trails and trying new vegetarian recipes, but we also never fight the urge to sit down with a good, greasy pizza and binge watch Netflix.


My philosophy surrounding fitness and food is all about balance, but it hasn’t always been that way. In college I worked at an ice cream shop, and I often ate ice cream for breakfast (guilty!).  Freshman year my diet consisted of muffins, pizza rolls, and other simple carbs, AKA, CRAP. My digestion suffered, but I was able to reverse my problems through clean eating and just listening to my body!

You don’t realize how much of life you’re missing out on when your digestive system isn’t healthy, and that is why I’m so passionate about having a balanced diet and a healthy digestive system! If you suffer from digestive issues, feel free to give me a shout because although I’m not an expert, I am more than happy to share with you my journey to digestive health!


Rooted Essence isn’t just another ‘health and wellness’ blog.  What makes RE stand out from other blogs is the fact that I’m not an expert.  I do have a science background, but I’m just an ordinary girl trying to find balance in my life between work, friends and family, blogging, and health.

I bring a unique perspective to wellness with Rooted Essence. I’m passionate about using the plants growing around me for healing and nourishing my body. You’ll often find me incorporating violet flowers into meals, dandelion roots into coffee, and other wild edibles into my dishes. Foraging for edible and medicinal wild plants is a serious passion of mine because it allows me to feel a deep connection with the environment, something that is hard to achieve these days.  You’ll see me incorporating this part of my passion into my ‘Natural Health’ section of the blog! I hope it inspires you to get outside and view the plants growing in your backyard as something other than weeds!

One thing’s for sure – I’m a huge nature and exercise aficionado! I’m in love with the mountains, water, cross country skiing, backpacking, flower photography, natural medicine, outdoor yoga, toads, ALL OF IT. One of my wishes is for my passion for life and nature to rub off on the people around me!

  • Popsugar Fitness – This website provides an abundance of free workout videos to keep your body in tip-top shape! With so many options, you never get bored, and the instructors are always super friendly, down-to-earth, and fun!

  • Learning Herbs – Learning Herbs is a great website for those of you that may want to learn how to incorporate herbs into your diet and lifestyle in a way that is safe and easy. They provide TONS of herbal recipes and remedies to get you started!

  • Fit Foodie Finds –  Fit Foodie Finds is a website run by Lee, a great food blogger and yogi who shares fun fitness tips and recipes that make you excited to eat and workout!

  • Ambitious Kitchen – This fun food website is run by Monique, and she shares anything from delicious recipes to workout tips and exercises. Definitely a good one to check out if you are looking for some motivation!

  • Oh She Glows – This creative food blog is run by Angela, and she’s famous for her amazingly creative recipes that are vegetarian, gluten free, and dairy free.  If you are looking to cut known allergen foods out of your diet, her blog is the place to be!

  • RD Bri Nutrition – Brianna is one of my best friends, and she’s also a great dietitian.  She’s got a spunky personality that brings a great energy to healthy living. Her posts are always informative, but if that isn’t enough, she also shares cute pictures of her corgi, Winston!

  • Lastly, my lovely parents – My mom and dad are who gave me my love and appreciation for the woods and all of the earth’s creatures. They molded my sense of humor, taught me how to cook, and taught me how to be thankful for everything and everyone I have in my life.  I wouldn’t be where I am today without my generous, loving parents.

I’ve shared with you a list of my inspirations, but I truly hope you find Rooted Essence to be of inspiration to you! We are all busy, active people, and my goal is to provide you with a blog that simplifies your food and workouts in a way that is fun and enjoyable!
